2018 KITCHEN TRENDS

Happy New Year everyone! 2018 is off to a wonderful start for me as I am now taking on clients on my own as a Design Consultant. My favourite aspect of the design world, is by far kitchens! (maybe it has something to do with my love of food & cooking) I want to talk about some of the kitchen trends for the upcoming year that have got me so excited!

Cabinetry colours will include white, obviously!! Because white is more timeless than it is trending and it will never really go out of style. On the rise in popularity will be grey tones. I love grey cabinetry because I think it provides a warm, chic appeal. Last but not least the cabinet trend I'm most excited about is JEWEL TONES. This is a breath of fresh air for a designer who is so used to doing white cabinets all the time, it will be exciting to do something a little different. Emerald greens, plums & even black. If your not yet ready to commit to a full kitchen painted in a rich colour, try a two tone kitchen with white or grey uppers and coloured base or island.

Designs will include a lot less upper cabinetry with an increase in open shelving. I believe this is done on account of both form and function. Lots of people can't reach the top of tall cabinets so this will bring everything to eye level. It will create a clean stream lined effect and provides an opportunity to mix in textured elements. Can't wait to incorporate this trend into projects.

Counter top surfaces will continue to be dominated by Quartz. With new patterns coming out all the time they are becoming so much more similar to natural stone. There is no down side to using quartz and that is why it is now the number one used counter top surface.

Appliances are going to be seen in brushed metals more so than stainless steel. In 2018 we will see a lot less of the commercial size gas ranges and more induction cook tops & wall ovens. This also contributes to the stream lined design that will be seen. Technology is going to be incorporated more into our appliances and fixtures from motion sensors to systems hooked up to your iPhone or tablet. The future is now people!

Accessories are always the finishing touch of a well designed kitchen. We will be seeing more natural accents, such as wood & marble as well as wabi sabi - a Japanese style that is all about imperfection & simplicity - pieces may appear to be weathered or old.

I am so looking forward to what 2018 will bring! I wish you and yours all the best xoxox
